For some unknown reason, I didn't attend this show. What a huge mistake that was! Instead, I sent the handy Sony WM-D3 to Stache's in the very competent hands of my good friend, Chazz Avery, to capture this great band in its early years (this was Ed Crawford's first home-state gig). John Hiatt and the Goners September 26, 1988 Stache's Columbus, Ohio

This was an amazing double bill that also included Boston's Scruffy The Cat. Between 1987 and 1990, Hiatt released Bring The Family, Slow Turning and Stolen Moments arguably his most creative and commercially successful period. These three albums were brilliant, and here he was touring in support of Slow Turning, in this tiny, intimate club. This was a wonderful evening of music, and the recording turned out great (as did most shows I recorded at Stache's).  I saw him a couple years later, during the Stolen Moments tour in a much bigger venue, which was also an excellent show.

Tailgators November 28, 1990 Stache's Columbus, Ohio

These guys put out a handful of really good albums in the mid to late 80's and on into the 90's. The Tailgators morphed from the early 80's LeRoi Brothers, playing a mix of swampy, bluesy roots rock that was incredibly interesting and fun. I'm fairly certain this was the original line-up of Don Leady, Keith Ferguson (Fabulous Thunderbirds) and Gary "Mud Cat" Smith. If my chronology is correct, Ferguson left the band shortly after this show to retire from touring and was replaced by JJ Barrera. More recently, in 2013, Leady released Hillbilly Boogie Sufin' Blues which is a great listen showcasing his guitar playing, and much easier to track down than some of the older Tailgator's releases. It would be great to see the back catalog released on CD a la Rhino.
