Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers June 23, 1987 Blossom Music Center Cleveland, Ohio

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Rock and Roll Caravan hit the Cleveland suburb of Cuyahoga Falls with The Georgia Satellites and The Del Fuegos in tow. To be completely honest, I was as excited to see the opening bands as the headliner, but all were fantastic. Tom and the boys were touring in support of their seventh studio album "Let Me Up (I've Had Enough)", featuring the co-Dylan penned "Jammin' Me". The tour featured stripped down, casual staging with a very back to basics feel. In the spirit of lending support to up and coming bands, Tom would often co-write songs with them, appear on their albums and provide opening act opportunities on Heartbreakers' tours. In the case of The Del Fuegos, guitarist Warren Zanes and Tom struck up a life-long relationship on this tour. So much so that Tom enlisted Warren to pen Petty The Biography many years later after reading one of Warren's previously published books. "My Life, Your World" from this show was officially released on "The Live Anthology". RIP Tom Petty.

Iggy Pop March 21, 1987 Ohio Center Columbus, Ohio

Here you have the mighty Iggy Pop opening for the Pretenders, at which Chrissie Hynde paused to kiss the stage that Iggy performed on. This is the first and only time I was caught taking my recorder into a show. The second attempt was successful, but I missed recording the first couple songs. Thankfully, my brother made it in on time with his recorder. As such, there are two sources presented here; the JW source is the complete show. The MW source is my recording which as mentioned is incomplete, but of better sound quality than the JW source. Another interesting note on this show is that this may be the last time Iggy performed Bang Bang live.

fIREHOSE March 20, 1987 Stache's Columbus, Ohio

For some unknown reason, I didn't attend this show. What a huge mistake that was! Instead, I sent the handy Sony WM-D3 to Stache's in the very competent hands of my good friend, Chazz Avery, to capture this great band in its early years (this was Ed Crawford's first home-state gig). Thankfully, Chazz also snapped some great pictures as did jfotoman.

Jerry Lee Lewis March 15, 1987 Newport Music Hall Columbus, Ohio 10 PM show

This was the second of two shows Jerry Lee played this night at the Newport, and it seems he spent most of the evening hitting the bottle. I can say this because:

*He was very glad to be in Cleveland (this is Columbus)
*After one of his band mates mentioned that he was not in Cleveland, he was damn glad to be in Dayton (again, this is Columbus)
*He fell of his stool
*He played one song more than once
*There were several times where it appeared he forgot lyrics. The female singer in his band (I think his daughter or step-daughter) had to jump in and sing. She sang a lot.


But who am I to judge? It's always great seeing one of the true rock and roll legends, and I simply couldn't pass on the opportunity.

Del Fuegos October 2, 1987 Agora Metropolitan Theater Cleveland, Ohio

This show was billed as the opening night of the new Cleveland Metropolitan Theater. However, the Agora's website and various other sources indicates that the new theater opened in 1986, or even 1985. Anyway, there was a big private party for VIPs a couple hours before the doors opened for this show. We got there early enough to where we blended in with the invited guests, got loge passes and partied on the house for a couple hours. I don't remember why, but I missed the first song. To this day, these guys remain one of my favorite bands from that era.

Big fun at the Newport! The Dead Milkmen were signing autographs at School Kids Records the afternoon of the show. I took my copy of the Eat Your Paisley LP over to School Kids to meet the band and get autographs. Dean signed the cover on the inside (where the vinyl went), which I thought was strange. He handed it back to me and naturally I looked inside to see what he wrote. It said, "What the hell you looking in here for?". Anyway, absolutely had a blast that Tuesday evening at the Newport with this great band.

One of the best shows I've EVER attended (I could probably say that about any of the Replacements shows I've seen). Anyway, the 'Mats were spot on that night and sounded great. Actually ran into them and played a couple games of pool with them at Dollar Bills prior to the show. Recorded this show from my sweet spot there at Bogart's and it sounds really good.
