The Valiants September & October 1979 Zak's Milwaukee, WI

In 1979, a young Joe Blue left the cornfields of Ohio to explore a big city lifestyle in Milwaukee. It wasn't long before he gathered a crew of like-minded folks and formed a band, The Valiants, of which he was the lead singer. They quickly became the darlings of the local music scene, writing and performing original material and paying homage to their heroes; The Seeds, Johnny Thunders, The Ramones, The Beatles, The Stooges, The MC5 and of course Elvis. They frequented the popular haunts of the day, Zak's and The Palms, and opened for many nationally touring bands. They were affectionately referred to by their primarily female fans as Joey B and the V's. Tragically, Joe Blue suffered a brain aneurysm later that same year which left him with permanent disabilities. This ended his rock and roll career. The band recruited another singer and continued to perform for the next few years. The reincarnated Valiants had a minor radio hit with "Shake Baby Shake" which was a reconstituted version of the Joe Blue penned "Shakin' In Your Boots". Other band members included Ron Ash (RIP), Keith Sommers (RIP), Craig Crabbe, Tab Stemm, Dale Kaminski, Steve Shantz, Michael Ford and Steve Braun. On April 11, 2014, Joe Blue succumbed to complications of a long-time battle with Diabetes, just short of his 60th birthday. I miss my brother, Joe Wickerham, and credit him for my self-proclaimed impeccable taste and passion for music. Rest in peace, bro!
