Wussy hit Columbus toward the end of their Forever Sounds tour, spewing their gloriously noisy brand of rock and roll into the face of a full room at Yalan Papillons' Double Happiness. Heavily represented by tunes from their newest Forever Sounds, the set's only tune earlier than Strawberry was the opening Little Paper Birds. They also served up a handful of tunes from Attica!, and the set included two covers that have become standards on this tour. It's bitter-sweet that they have so many good new songs, that they don't have enough time to play more good old songs. Everyone knows, or has certainly read, that Wussy is one of the best, if not the best, band in America right now (and in my opinion, has been for several years now). I wondered how they would top the momentum they achieved from  the Attica! release/tour, and the experiences I've had during the Forever Sounds era have proven these guys get better with age.

Last minute call to head to Cincinnati to see the Wussy duo in their last home-town appearance before their first full band tour of the UK later this month. I've heard them perform the "Forever Sounds" tunes several times now, and it was great to hear these stripped down versions, along with a couple Ass Ponys chestnuts. Any time I go see June Star, (eight times in the past six years) I never know what to expect. Will it be Andrew leading a full band, Andrew and (more often than not), Dave Hadley on pedal steel, Andrew solo acoustic or some other configuration. Not that it matters much, each is a very enjoyable experience, and Andrew has a way of drawing his audiance in to feel each song as he does. At least that's how it goes for me. The emotion is real and can be felt as well as heard. 
This night was a bit different- just Andrew and Andy Bopp playing together. First, a handfull of Andy Bopp songs with Andrew backing him on lap steel. Then Andrew taking the mic for a few of his tunes, including the new single "You're Still Here" which you can find HERE.

Scrawl February 27, 2016 Woodward Theater Cincinnati, Ohio

Attending Ohio State in the mid/late '80s allowed me to see all the good bands in all the good clubs. Scrawl was one of those bands, and anywhere they played was one of those clubs. Fast forward thirty years. Scrawl, (and any other band Marcy Mays and/or Sue Harshe are playing in) is still one of those bands, and we can credit Marcy for bringing back the feel of campus in the '80s/'90s with her club, Ace of Cups. When I had the opportunity to see Scrawl open for my current favorite band (Wussy), I knew it would be a great double header. I was not mistaken. Their post-punk/riot grrrl sound has fared well throughout the years, and they sounded really good this night. The reaction of the sold out crowd, many of which arrived early enough for Scrawl's opening set, seemed to agree.

Wussy February 27, 2016 Woodward Theater Cincinnati, Ohio

Wussy rolled into the sold out Woodward Theater with their sonic assault, playing the entire new (fantastic, awesome, wonderful, great, spectacular, super) album "Forever Sounds". Almost sticking to the set list, the evening also included fifteen other tunes, include the newer than new "The Tall Weeds" and two covers; the Twinkeyz "Aliens In Our Midst", and the slightly less obscure "Ceremony" by Joy Division/New Order. I've seen Wussy dozens of time now, but this time was a little different. Overall, they seemed more practiced, yet still gloriously shabby. Lisa in particular seemed to have a renewed swagger to her stage presence, and John Erhardt has certainly become an integral part of their live sound. For years now, Wussy has been critally acclaimed in the press- let's hope "Forever Sounds" is the breakthrough this band deserves. Opening the show were the Columbus based post-punk pioneers Scrawl who delivered a tight and impressive set of their own. These are the better days...
