I was fortunate enough to be invited to Sleepy's surprise 75th birthday bash at one of his favorite dive bars. A quick glance at the set list proves his moniker as the human juke box. He is slowing a bit here, and hands the microphone over a little more than he used to, but this guy can play guitar with the best of them. Now 80, he continues to tour, packing houses wherever he goes.

He is slowing a bit here, and hands the microphone over a little more than he used to, but this guy can play guitar with the best of them. Now 80, he continues to tour, packing houses wherever he goes.

I'm almost embarrassed to say, for as many times as I've seen this band, and for as much as I like these guys, I've not posted one of their shows. Maybe because I know a bunch of their shows are available at the Internet Archive. Anyway, these guys have taken a few different forms over the years. This version still includes Zach Daniels on banjo, and Max Paley had joined the band on mandolin, which happens to be my favorite iteration of the band. Wouldn't have imagined seeing them in Newark, Ohio, of all places, but this was a fantastic show- maybe because this was Newark, Ohio. These guys were/are an awfully good band! (They are coming back to Columbus again on September 24, 2015- their first time in many years.) This show was in a tiny, gritty little inner-city bar in downtown Newark- first and only time I'd been there. Someone affiliated with the bar had a pretty cool light show that helped set the mood, and their playing was stellar, Just a really good show.
1. Little Paper Birds
Putting this one out there simply because it is one of my favorite shows of the era. I've said this somewhere before, but it's worth repeating; Wussy seems to love Cleveland. My favorite place to see them is the Beachland Tavern. Never mind there's a blizzard and 15 inches of snow on the ground. Always seems to work out.
