Sadly, this turned out to be the last time I saw Ronald play live. What a wonderful talent and what a huge loss to the Columbus music scene. Ronald Koal put a bullet in his brain sometime during the early morning hours of May 8th, 1993. He was 33 years old.

  1. Hi Monty: Thanks a million! I lived in Columbus from 1988 to 1990. I probably saw Ronald and the band play about 5 times--maybe I saw him on 9/2/89. Was Chelsea's close to Apollo's on High Street? I typically saw him at Stache's way up on the other side of OSU. This night, around early September, I saw him closer to Apollo's, Papa Joe's, and some of the other places in the heart of High Street. I brought a friend who was visiting from VA to see the show. We had played in a VA band together. We were talking a few months ago about Ronald, and how great we both thought he was. We looked him up on line and found he had died not long after I returned to VA. What a pity, I always thought Ronald was one of the brightest spots on the Columbus music scene. It was so cool to hear "Back to Innocence" again. - Bill in VA.

    1. Great to hear from you. Chelsie's was farther South than Apollo's, I want to say very close to 5th Ave. I've got a few other RK shows, including at least one at Stache's. Let me know if you're interested. Ronald absolutely was and is one of the brightest spots in the Columbus music scene. Take care!

  2. Thanks Monty. I remember now. Chelsea's was in the Short North. I have been in that club, but I don't think I saw Ronald there. I think I saw him at a place called "Street Scene" or something like that a few blocks on the other side of Apollo's (north). I also think it was an off night...like a Sunday or a weeknight. The bar was so quiet that night that my friend (Tom) introduced himself to Ronald and the band and complimented them. By contrast I had seen them many more times, but never spoke to them. Tom visited very close to September 2nd. though so the show I'm thinking of was within a month of this one. Would love to hear your other Ronald Koal and the Trillionaires shows!

  3. Thanks for this trip down memory lane. I'm the drummer on this recording - Jeff Wentz. If you remember me, I wore red frame glasses and played a white Simmons electric drum set. I remember this gig well. We did it to shoot a video, but I don't think I ever saw it. I played in the band in the late 80s and then split for Seattle. I'm glad a few people liked the music; I don't have many fond memories of it. It was a time of lots of tension and changes. Music was changing. Ronald was sort of desperate for something to finally hit. His manager, Gabor, looked at the band as easily replaceable circus musicians. The band was full of big egos and insecurities. None of it was fun. Don't get me wrong, there were moments when the band actually sounded good and it was transporting, but it didn't make up for the tangential hell of it all. I guess it made for a few good parties. Ronald was a country boy at heart. Very tortured like he was always under a vice. He was very funny, too. A complex creature for sure. Ed and Rob were the other players. You couldn't find 4 more different and conflicting characters. This made for great song writing and I think this could have been the best version of the Koal band ever. I wanted it all to be better. It never gelled. I left for Seattle with my girlfriend Marlene. I played in a couple groups here. One was Gruntruck. You can find them on Youtube. Made some albums. Now I'm old and play golf and go to Hawaii. MUCH happier. Thanks. Jeff.

  4. Hey Jeff Wentz. It's 2023 and I just came across this RKB stream by accident. Its taking me down memory lane. This is Cindy - the short, curly haired blond that used to be married to Rob. I look back at my experience as a RKB groupie with fond memories of some really great live shows (and one fucking hilariously scary ride in your old white beater of a car). Take it easy.
